MS One Care $13 @ Costco.com

I liked it when it was free. I ordered one for me and one for the wife.

Edit: Oh crap, you can load it on up to three PCs... how do you cancel an order from Costco.com?

is 1-care even good?

Well... Good is a relative term.

I've been running it on three machines for the past several months with generally no problems - Like everything it has it's pluses & it's minuses...

pros:
  • integrates with ms very well
runs & updates itself almost automatically
found a virus or two that others missed
can be set to automatically tune up & optimize the family or biz computer unattended
    run & updates it's own anti-spyware service
one box has 3 licenses - good for 3 computers

cons:
  • painfully slow on the virus scans
unbearably slow on the spyware scan
antivirus defs updated fairly often - spyware defs very infrequently
makes you get rid of almost all of your other well functioning virus & spyware apps before it will install
conclusion:
better run this on a machine faster than 1.6 ghz - takes like an hour to do the spyware scan on my 1.6 machine - much better on my 2.4 ghz machine , but still too slow - on the 1.2 ghz laptop, it can tie up the machine for a long time if i let it run the whole shooting match

bottom line:
it's worth at least $13 for all it does - i would not use it again if i had the choice to go back - i find it to be an extremely annoying program to endure, when in fact it could be made into a much better program - note: that i'm not positive it will work with the new vista os - finally, did i mention that this is yet another fine product from ms? - 3 out of 10 stars for me.

is this a resource and memory hog, like norton? any chance of running this on machines with less than 512mb? That's why i like grisoft avg, very little resources used.

i think the best thing about onecare is that it allows 3 installs per copy.

it seems like its slightly less memory hungry than the symantec brand products. though i do not think it scans as fast.

Hans, I agree that the licensing and price for OneCare is very attractive, but there are other options that are free. As far as the bloated Symantec software is concerned that's an entirely different subject. 😛 I won't go into detail because there are dozens of other threads discussing free anti-malware software, and I don't want to derail this thread. A good place to start is by reading Freeware Antivirus, AntiSpyware, Firewall, and AntiSpam Applications Thread.

*edited for clarity

My review (that john linked) has now been updated to match changes in the program (see my post in that thread for what was changed/updated), enjoy! I am now using this on many of my family members' PCs. Best security package for people that are not good with computers, IMO.

Live OneCare completely borked two of my systems. On one of them (a Core 2 Duo w/2GB of RAM) it made it so that even opening up a folder (like double-clicking on My Computer) took 15-20 seconds for it to respond, and would spike the CPU to 100%. Everytime I would try to reboot at least one component of it would crash and cause me to have to physically kill the power. On another machine that was having internet problems (which I later determined were related to OneCare-it takes over the Windows Firewall by the way, making it nearly impossible to manage) it kept telling me that it was out of date and needed to be updated before it would keep working. I told it to turn itself off in the mean time, it said it couldn't do that because it was out of date, and got stuck trying to update itself, until it had sucked all of the resources of the PC completely dry. It also broke all of my XBOX media center connect stuff.

In other words, for me, it wasn't worth the $20 I paid for it, and I would gladly pay another $20 for someone to erase the memory of this POS software from my brain.
