MS Office autoupdate and Chrome/Firefox

To be fair, I'm running OS X/Office 2011. From what I remember of Win7/Office 2007, this is probably a cross-platform thing. And if there's a simple answer, it totally escapes me. That said:

Why the eff does Microsoft Office's autoupdate require that I shut down Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox?

It probably comes with plugins for them and assumes they need shutdown to overwrite the shared libraries.

That's probably why, but for FireFox use "Save Session and Exit" / the Save Session extension. For Chrome, I haven't been able to find anything satisfactory, unfortunately.
