MS Messenger

Hello Folks,

If I am running MS Messenger 6.2, why would version 4.7 still be on my PC? I have tried to remove the 4.7 version but I cannot. Also, the 4.7 version is in a different folder than 6.2 so I could just delete the folder but I am sure that there would still be entries in the registry. Any ideas? I tried Microsoft's website.

Thanks, Bill

control panel>add remove programs> then on the side add/remove windows components.

uncheck windows messenger. (if youre using XP)

there is also some websites out there with a string of text you can copy into 'run' and it will uninstall it that way.

google 'uninstall windows messenger'.

4.7 is "Windows Messenger" and is required for remote assistance etc.

6.2 is "MSN Messenger" and is the most up-to-date version.

Confused

Good ole Mother Microsoft. I understand that Windows Messenger gives more functionality but aren't MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger basically the same thing? What irks me is if one version is running, I am prevented from running the other version. If MSN Messenger is the most up-to-date, why wouldn't it allow remote assistance?

All very common misconceptions. Windows Messenger recently released v5.0 and is designed more for the corporate user, meaning that it will allow you to logon to SIP servers and such...while MSN Messenger is geared toward the average consumer and has a completely different UI and several features that WinMsgr does not have. You are not prevented from running both programs simultaneously...in fact, you can be logged onto both programs at the same time (you just need to use a different passport account for each, that's all). And last, a few features that both programs can execute, such as Remote Assistance, simply requires that Windows Messenger be available...if you hack WinMsgr off your machine, RA and app sharing, etc, will cease to function via MSN Messenger.
