I'd definitely go in and look around. Probably would have some hardware to look at also.
 
shrug, I don't see why not. MS does make a rather large selection of products. I don't see how this is really any different from an Apple store.

I imagine stuff like the Xbox360 and Windows Media Home Server will have a heavy presence.

Still, these kind of stores are a bad idea. Didn't work for Dell or Gateway....don't know why MS thinks it will work for them.

- XBOX360s
- 360 games
- gaming peripherals (Sidewinder line)
- office peripherals (keyboards, mice)

Somehow, I doubt they're going to open a retail store, and line it wall to wall with boxes of OSes.

Well considering all the different flavors of vista, server, and upcoming windows 7 they could practically make a store out of it...it would be like going to the cereal isle at your local grocery store 🙂

Because it works for Apple. Microsoft's lack of control on OS installations really kills their image, and is something Apple gets right. The out of the box experience is very important to an end user.

I still think though that there is allot of unfounded hatred that will be voiced when these stores open.

The main difference is that MS doesn't sell computers, and Apple computers are not as widely available at B&M stores as Windows PCs. I'm sure MS will sell computers and stuff made by other manufacturers, but those computers are already so widely available.

The level of Apple's success with their stores is hard to explain, but there is no store in my mall that is ever as crowded as the Apple store.

I imagine it wouldn't be hard to draw kids/teens into the store if they set up console stations like Best Buy has. (whether they'll actually buy anything, well that's another story 😀)
 
The Microsoft Store will be wildly successful. It will create jobs and is a win / win situation for long term growth prospects of the venerable company.

Buy.

Just saying that I think it is a risky venture. If they can pull it off, more power to them.
 
An MS store would be weird. First, would the store open at 10am but not allow shoppers in until 10:20am? Would you be happily shopping along when suddenly your vision goes all blue and you would have to be carried out of the store to be revived? Would you be looking at a Zune when a saleperson grabs it out of you hand, says "You look like you're shopping for Office 2010, would you like some help?"

Like it was said above though, I'd imagine MS isn't just going to open this store to try to sell Windows/Windows based computers. They've got their peripherals, Zune, Xbox, etc.
 
If they are going into it as more of a info kiosk/showcase with full understanding that it probably won't ever turn a profit, then fine.

But if they are expecting it to make money, then I think they are insane. People don't buy OS's in a box. They just buy a new computer. Why would I buy an Xbox for retail from MS when Dell routinely has them for 15% off? The Zune is an ugly brick of a player that will never have the apple...err appeal of an Ipod. And you can buy all of this stuff at Walmart or Best Buy anyway.

It's just not a money generating move IMHO.

Ill bet they make money, and lots of it. I use an MS wireless mouse and KB and if I could get the latest and greatest without any hassle at a tiny 15% premium, so be it.

Not only that, you have to think of future product development that retail outlets would encourage. And Microsoft partners could also benefit from selling their wares in these stores, with a small percent going to MS for the space.

Maybe Im too optimistic, but I really like the idea. Ill bet however it will be a very slow roll out.
