MS Internet Explorer,,, Hangs, Freezes!!

I have a pc at work with IE 5.5 service pack 1 working on it. Also, the pc has AOL software working on it.
The problem is,, when using IE,,, when I click on a link, it will freeze or hang for about 30 seconds. This is a intermittant problem. Meaning that I can click on several links and they will open within a few seconds. Then,, after a while,,, things freeze.
When they freeze,, I will notice that when I click on a link that the modem "transmit light" does not flash. Then, about 30 seconds later, the model light flashes and the link opens.
I don't have any other programs running as I used msconfig to stop all other programs from loading.
I have added, removed, updated, etc IE and nothing works.
Also, used the IE Tools and it doesn't fix the problem.
I have added, deleted, updated AOL, nothing works.
The only thing that works is when I go back to IE ver 4.0 and no AOL on the machine.
Win 98 is running on the machine.
ANY AND ALL HELP IS NEEDED AS THIS PROBLEM IS DRIVING ME NUTS!!! LOLOLOL

update it the best you can and the error check and defrag....that is the simplist thing to start with right now
