After having my good 'ol Logitech Wheel Mouse stick on me for the last time I decided to make the switch to optical. So, I went out and picked up a cheapo MS Wheel Mouse Optical. I really like the feel and so far I'm happy. (My kills are up on MOHAA MP, which is nice.) Anyway, I never bothered to install the IntelliPoint software or drivers - does this make any difference? Will I see increased performance? I'm running XP Pro.

Oh yeah, anyone care to recommend a decent pad? My old one would cause the mouse to stutter, so as of now, I'm just using the desk, which does the job.

Download IntelliPoint mouse software version 4.01...I think you'll be better off updating the software. I'm not sure if it will make any difference, but it is a lot better now than I had it in Windows 2000. It doesn't jump around anymore...very smooth. If you have an optical mouse, the best pad would be a cloth mouse pad because it feels really good. If you get one of those plastic ones or just use the bare desk, the mouse slides around. Hope this helps.

if you have extra buttons on the side of your mouse, then you can program those buttons to do specific functions using the intellipoint software

I'm a Microsoft mouse owner since as long I have a mouse (this sounds really dumb but WGAF)

I have 2 Intellimouse rodents, the Explorer @ home & the Intellimouse Optical @ work and both of them seem to run better with Intellipoint 4.01.

As for the mousepad try to get one of those really colourfull ones, stay away from single color or plain (not textured) mousepads
