I uninstalled Intellipoint 4.x, then downloaded and installed Intellipoint 5.0. Before, in the system tray, the Intellipoint 4.x icon was there. Now there is no Intellipoint 5.0 icon. Anyone else experiencing this?

No, nothing there.

Anyone else notice that there is no system tray icon for the new Intellipoint software?

Yes ... you have to invoke the program manually... use Control Panel ... Mouse

I think once you get it running ... you notice other problems ...

... like the program specific settings are gone ...

I went back to 4.12 version

In Intellipoint 4, you go into Mouse properties and right click on the picture of the mouse (the one with the buttons highlighted). The tray icon option is in that context menu.

No, there is no option to enable Microsoft Intellipoint 5.0 to load up in the system tray. Or maybe I'm not looking in the right place.

Is there anyone else that knows how to put the MS Intellipoint 5.0 icon in the system tray?

I use Intellipoint on one computer for scrolling some very large folders. After "upgrading" from 4.1 to 5, I could no longer scroll folders in explorer anymore. It seems they left something out. I reinstalled 4.1.

I "always hide" the icon on that computer because I don't like having anything in my system trays other than my firewall; especially that silly button that hides icons on any of my machines.

I recommend you regress back to 4.1 or 4.12.

I use v5 and I have no problems scrolling. It feels the same although I needed to change some settings. I think you need to change the scroll wheel assignment to "auto scroll".

I'm talking about auto scrolling within folders in explorer. The default wheel setting is "auto scroll". Intellipoint software is not necessary to auto scroll within documents or web pages. The only useful purpose I found it to have was to be able to auto scroll within folders that contain documents, pictures or audio-video media files ...especially large ones. Intellipoint versions 3.0 through 4.12 had this feature. Version 5 does not. Microsoft has been criticized here on AnandTech and several other boards for failing to mention the removal of this and other features in their documentation for version 5.

Thanks for trying to help. Perhaps, I mis-communicated what I was trying to say and failed to validate my reason for using an older version.

The recommendation is in response to your question; the implication being that making the silly icon appear in the system tray can't be done with version 5 (and by that I'm implying why would you want to?) and that version 5 fails to live up to it's prior incarnations.
See here!

I mis-spoke by using the word regress ...using the older version of Intellipoint is actually a progressive step.

I have the MS Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 and Win XP. I have always just used the built-in mouse drivers and the control panel mouse setting to set speed, scrolling etc.
Is there any need to use the separate Intellimouse program? What would I gain ?

TIA,
