MS Intellimouse Explorer software problem

I just downloaded the 4.1 software to set up my old explorer mouse on a Win98SE machine. Ran the install and it stops with an error stating that it is looking for the 1033.mst file in the windows\temp folder\... It says to please make sure that the file exists in the folder, but the folder doesn't exist. I did find the file in my programs install directory, but not in the temp directory. I thought I'd trick it by making a directory and then putting the file in there, but it creates a new random temp directory each time so you wouldn't be able to put the 1033.mst file in the correct one.

I wondered what else to do cause it just will not let me install the software (to get access to the side buttons in Win98SE). I decided to download the older software 4.01. I Went to the MS site and searched for the file but when I download it, it is the same previous 4.1 software (bad links or something on MS's part).

So now after doing a google search, and not finding any older software, my only option is to see if I have it saved on my old machine or if someone else has some other idea. I want to use my side buttons but Win98SE will not let you do it without the software.

What if you clean out the Windows\temp directory, reboot and try the install again?

I cleaned out the temp directory, but it doesn't copy the file there at all during the install, and I can't just copy it there either cause it creates a new directory where it looks for the file like here \windows\temp\_8agi\1033.mst. There is no possible way that I could guess what the next directory name would be. And to put it worse, it doesn't ask you where the file could be, it just gives you the error 1102 or something and then click 'ok'.

Also, I've been having problems with the mouse and I know how good MS is with RMA's, but they ask for the serial number on the bottom of the mouse, which is just about all rubbed off of it now(cause I used it on the arm of my chair). I have the Explorer 1.0 mouse and I liked the layout of the side buttons better than the new version (I have one of those too), but I'm sure if I did get to return it, I would just get a new version 3.0. Not really sure what to do about the serial number cause I have had it for about 2 years now and I wouldn't be able to find the receipt.

Does this help? :)

I had this problem with discjuggler.....basically find YOUR temp dir...not THE temp directory. You can find it under c:\document and settings\yourusername\local settings\temp

nevermind...your on win98....sorry this is only for win2k or winxp

Sweet! Thanx man. Even on MS I couldn't get it cause they foolishly linked to the new file. That should work cause I know that I had the older software on my other machine but I couldn't find the old install file.
