MS IntelliMouse Explorer isn't seen by Win98SE

Came with a CD, version 3.2 Intellipoint Mouse Software (which I installed), and Win98SE doesn't see the mouse. The pointer is there but stays in the middle of the screen. During the boot process it stops and displays a message that no mouse was found and I can install a mouse. When I go into Control Panel, and Add New Hardware, it shows an unknown device and says it's my USB controller. Any search of CDs has it saying that the USB.inf it has is better than anything else I can find - on my motherboard driver install CD (Epox 8K7A, which includes a USB driver, that I installed), Win98SE CD, or Windows Update.

I'm multibooting and my Win2000 sees the Intellimouse fine.

I was using a cheap Chinese USB mouse before and Win98SE works with that, but Win98SE reports it not as a USB mouse but as an HID mouse, whatever that is. Any ideas? Thanks.

<< Check here or here for newer drivers for your USB. They might be in the via 4in1's too.

I installed the latest USB filter driver but Win98SE reports that the driver it's already using is better, 4/23/99. It still doesn't see the Intellimouse.

Don't worry about the Human Interface Device thing you get. Somehow your USB controller drivers got messed up so you'll need to fix it or load drivers for it.

Figure out what's wrong with the controller. Maybe uninstall it and then see if you can get it to work properly afterwards.

When I plug the Intellimouse into the USB port on my computer and boot to Win98SE, I get the message that no mouse is found. I can press enter and finish the boot process (mouseless, of course) and go into Control Panel/Device Manager and USB devices and there's a new device, besides the 5 functioning USB devices normally shown, and it's an "Unknown Device" and it's associated with the same driver as the others, \Win98\inf\usb.inf dated 4/23/99, but it's Unknown and not working and I can't find a better driver anywhere.

I found a workaround for the problem, but it's not the one I would prefer. MS supplied a connector to allow you to plug this USB device into the PS/2 mouse connection on your computer. Win98SE is OK with this, so that's how I'm running it, and I guess I will continue to run it like this if I can't find a way to get the mouse to run on the USB port.

I would say disregard what win98 tells you and update the usb driver anyway. I am whacky like that.

Here's what it says in Device Manager in Win98SE for USB:

Universal Serial Bus controllers
Generic USB Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

All 5 of these are said to be "working properly". Now that's when I don't have the Intellimouse plugged into the USB port. Right now I have it plugged into the PS/2 port and it's working. If I shut down the machine and plug the Intellimouse into the USB port and boot Win98SE, it doeesn't see a mouse at all (and I'm mouseless), and I go into Device Manager again and I see all the same stuff for USB but there's one more device called "Unknown Device" and it says that it's not working right and that the driver for it isn't appropriate for the device. Nothing I point it to satisfies it. Installing various drivers doesn't fix it. I just installed the latest VIA 4in1, version 4.38 and that didn't help.

Now are you saying I should maybe remove the 5 devices above and then try installing USB drivers?
