MS Intellimouse Explorer install error

After I first installed the mouse, I went to Control Panel->Printers and Other Hardware- >Mouse, clicked on the Pointers tab, and got an error message:

The C:\WINDOWS\System32\Windows default file, which contains the 'Normal Select' cursor, is either missing or corrupt.

I clicked OK and kept getting the same message for each cursor type (Busy Select cursor, Precision Select cursor, Text Select cursor, many more). Everything else seems OK. What caused this?

This doesn't sound like a mouse problem. It's a Windows problem. Your mouse pointers are part of the GUI and they can be changed with the Windows theme. You might want to try popping in your Windows CD and seeing if you have an option to install additional mouse pointers (some versions have this as an addon). That may take care of the problem by replacing all files when it adds the new ones. 😉 Let us know how it goes.

Forgot to mention, this is WinXP Pro. Should it not install necessary pointers by default?

Also this problem only happened immediately after I installed the mouse. But I wondered if it was showing a problem somewhere.
