The XBox is not about gaming for Microsoft. It's about an entrance into your living room. They are not going to invest heavily in a new 'game console' in the next round. It's going to be about merging all the technology in your home into a single system. It was never about gaming for Microsoft and you can bet that they are only thinking about the next gen platform right now. The earliest we can expect new hardware will be in another 3 to 4 years. You don't need a new console to add motion technology (like the Wii). The XBox and PS3 can handle that without losing 2fps. The problem is that all that technology has been patented and they need to find ways around them. If it weren't for patents, all consoles would have motion technology.

Bottom line, don't hold your breath. MS, Sony and Nintendo will be milking the current generation until there's no more to give.

Silly me, I thought 6 months before a console died from heartburn was actually a shorter life cycle then previous generations. I guess I haven't been paying attention!

Didn't you get the memo? Everybody knows about the RROD problems, and jokes about it became stale over 6 months ago.

Still, I think microsoft recognizes what a huge deal it was to get their console out a year earlier than sony. And when sony says the ps3 is a ten year system, that doesnt mean that there wont be a ps4 for 10 years. Id say xmas 2011 is highly likely for a new 360 (6 years) and possibly Wii, but I dont think theyll be nearly as large of a technological leap as this gen was over the last.

However successful the XB1 and 360 might seem to gamers, its still been a gigantic money sink for MS, they probably wont be in the black overall until the 3rd or 4th generation if all goes well. 2008 was the first year the xbox division ever turned a profit, so theyve got about 7 years and probably just as many billions of losses to make up for. So yeah, theyre hardly in a rush, but theyre not resting on their laurels either.

Nintendo on the other hand, could probably bury the competition in one fell swoop if they so desired. They're too intrinsically a gaming company and dont seem to really get the living room thing, but if they put out a serious 360/PS3 competitor, while still keeping the Wii around for the casuals, the other two are going to be in deep doo-doo. They can lose money for only so long before they throw in the towel.

Yes, but the fanboys are the minority. Take a stroll over to the Apple forum and just see how many threads there are about "Should I wait until the next release?" or something to that effect.

Kind of like DaveSimmons and his Xbox 360 Falcon/Jasper/whenever-he's-done-with-his-stack-of-PC-games :p

Heh. Besides finishing up Mass Effect, NWN 2 MoTB, and Ratchet & Clank 2 my unplayed stacks include:

PS1: Final Fantasy Anthology, FF Chronicles, FF 7, FF 8
PS2: FF X, Xenosaga 3, Front Mission 4, Ico, Persona 3 FES, God of War +more
PS3: Marvel Ultimate Alliance
PC: Freedom Force vs. Third Reich, Silent Storm, Jade Empire, Half-Life 2 & ep1-2, Steam X-Com 5-pack, Gothic 2, Supreme Commander, Tomb Raider, Shivering Isles +more

... so I could easily hold out for that rumored $50 CES price drop even without buying any new PC or PS3 games like Valkyrie Chronicles.

Dude, you know what we mean. You spent like forever ragging on the 360, telling us "as soon as Jasper comes out, I'll buy one". And here you are, after Jasper has come out, making more excuses. If you don't want to buy one, fine, that's your decision, but stop telling us how "OMG, soon!" on your 360 purchase and how that justifies all your opinions about it, because you've pretty much lost your credibility on that one. Just sayin'.

They really have no reason to release a new console. The Playstation cycle is typically very long, and Nintendo is not a direct competitor.

The only real threat is that if the PS3 developers continue to squeeze better and better performance out of that console for the next 5-6 years (like they did with the PS2) and the XBox just can't keep up.
