MS: How to fix DRM after you've had your console replaced

I've gotten the question quite a bit recently, so I thought it a good time to point out that if your console was serviced by Microsoft, and your DRM licenses were not moved, you can do it yourself by following the steps shown on this Xbox.com web page.

1. Attach your hard drive or memory unit.
2. Turn on the console.
3. Sign in to Xbox LIVE with the gamer profile that originally downloaded the content.
4. Go to Xbox LIVE Marketplace and select Account Management, Download History.
5. Select an item and then select Download Again.
6. Repeat step 5 for each item in your download history.

So, before you throw eggs at me, yes - I understand that the folks who purchase every single XBLA title, and every theme will have to do this over 100 times.

We read the forums, we read the comments. Despite being called unresponsive and foolish, we do hear you, and we do listen.

We're always trying to take away as much of the DRM complication as we can. It isn't the easiest or the best solution, but it's a step in the right direction.

We should have more to share with you all in the near future. Which, by the way, is closer and less post-apocalyptic than the future depicted in Thundarr the Barbarian.

Good to see they are moving to fix this.

they still need to fix it so that you can play full games offline on another xbox360 w/your harddrive that you purchased them on.

that is the dumbest thing they have implemented.

Nice. Seems like this is open to abuse though, unless the re-download "deauthorizes" the first console.

Has anyone tried it yet? I have about 30 XBLA games that are currently not tied to my 360. Really sucked when Live was having issues for an entire month around last Christmas. I basically couldn't play any of them.

So... wait... is this something new then? Because this has never worked in the past.

I believe this was a fix in the last dashboard update. When my 360 was replaced in September, this is how Microsoft told me to recover my games then and it worked fine. It's simply time-consuming, even for the 20 or so games I own.

I still cant play some tunes in RB that I bought with the same HD on a dif 360 on another 360 without it being online. It really sux. I dont see why as you cant really rip the song and copy it over to anything. Or can you.................................:Q

What do you mean? What's RB?

You can rip music with the 360. Pop in a music cd and it'll rip it to the HDD, if that's what you're asking.

RB=Rockband. I mean MS wont let you play songs bought on XBL for RB and let you take your HD to another 360 and let you play them unless you are online. By ripping I meant that MS somehow must think you can somehow rip a song you bought, say for RB, and copy it somehow to someone elses 360, otherwise why cant I play the songs I downloaded to the same HD when its connected to a different console. If I buy song on one console it wont play on another unless im online and vice versa. Its annoying because I have a 360 at home always online and another 360 at my girlfriends house which is not online and whenI bring my HD to her house I cant play the tunes I paid for.

Is it possible to copy raw data off the HD? I think I read that there are adapters that allow the proprietary HD to be hooked up to a computer. There's limited utility here because everything is encrypted.

If cloning the HD is possible, without the console/gamertag lock, one could clone HDs to play on an arbitrary number of consoles.
