OK Im sure there is a way of doing this and hopefully someone out there can help..so here goes...

now i have a rather large spreadsheet in excel. and what i want to do is have two people open the document and be able edit certain cells.
now i know the problems of overwriting one users data with another. but the cells that need editing are different for each user so there would be no problem with overiting each others data. so can i easily open the document so that when each user changes the data in their cells it saves it to the one file, or having two identical files and merging the changes together........

Cheers for any help

You can't have two people editing the same workbook at the same time but you can have each person working on their own copy of the workbook and then have a master workbook with cells that are linked to each of the individual workbooks.

The individual workbooks should have distinct names and should be located in a fixed location. When the master workbook is opened, Excel will recognize that there are external links to other workbooks and will ask you if you want to refresh the data in the master workbook from the links.

this can be done in Excel now...at least in can in Office 2000 and above. There is a sharing option under the tools menu, go from there....

basically, it will give you a summary of changes made by the other person...it is actually a very good idea, but I had problems with not being able to open the file again!
