Could someone please help me out? I just did a clean install of Windows 98 Second Edition. Everything seems to go smoothly until I have to restart for the first time after the install. I then get a message that pops up saying "MS-DOS incompatible with this version of Windows. Insert a Startup diskette matching this version of Windows and then restart." Anyone know what I'm doing wrong and how I can fix it? I've done the fdisk thing, deleted the primary partition and created a new one. I then did format c: and after that ran setup from the CD ROM. I go through setup without a problem until I have to restart. How do I find out what version of DOS I'm using and what version I need? Also, how do I install DOS? Doesn't it get intalled from the boot disk? Thanks,

Question? Are you trying to install win98 se on the computer in your signature? If so you cannot do the installation in the order you are trying to do it. You must install win 98 first then install xp. A possible reason you are getting the dos error is because xp doesn't natively run dos- it only emulates dos for programs that need it.

It sounds as though you may be using an older version of DOS on the boot disk with which you are doing the fdisking and formatting. If you are formatting with the /s switch or using the sys command to place the system files on the hard drive, then you're placing an older version of the system files on the drive. Then, when you run the install from the command line everything goes okay until you reboot and you wind up with an older version of DOS trying to load a version of Windows that requires DOS v. 7. If that's the case, you need a Win98SE startup disk, or you can just boot from the Win98SE setup CD, assuming the hardware supports booting from the CD-ROM drive.
