I've just clean installed winME on my newly built computer and I've discovered the infamous yellow ? next to Other devices and another next to its branch [PCI Mass Storage Controller]. So I flip over to System Properties under performance and in the Details box it reads as follows:
Compatibility-mode paging reduces overall system performance
Drive C is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system
Drive D is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system

What do you think I've done wrong or is it because I used a 98se
boot disk to fdisk, format and load the OS..
Is there any thing that I might have changed in the BIOS setting when I was setting up that is causing the concern.. Thanks for any suggestion you might have in advance...

It's me again. I forgot to mention that the drive(s) as you can probably tell are of the same HDD and it is connected to the ATA 100 primary connector on the Asus A7V. Thanks

i think that means you don't have your bus mastering drivers installed, so it's defaulting to pio mode transfers instead of udma. have you installed the latest via 4 in 1 drivers? that might fix it.

If what borealiss said doesn't work you can often delete the hard disk controllers and on reboot it will reload them and correct itself. Then install the drivers.

this works for win98 but unsure about ME
Click Start, then Run... , and type regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS
You should see a value named "NoIDE". Delete it, close regedit and reboot!

There are usually 3 reasons for DOS Compat Mode:

1, you have the wrong drivers loaded.

2, you have a NOIDE entry in your registry.

3, Windows doesn't like your Master Boot Record. This is easily fixed by using a Boot Floppy and Fdisk /MBR.
