MS DOS Commands please

Well i want to know some ms dos commands because my system crashed and when you insert the windows xp cd it tells you do repair it, and when i go to the repair option all it does is take you to dos. What commands can you use to fix your comp that cant even get to the desktop?

Any particular reason why it crashed? You looking to do a clean install? Need to repair the registry?

thats the thing i dont know what i have to do to fix it. I dont want to install windows again. The only way i could fix it is by doing something in dos and i dont know what it is.

well, first you might want to try to do a scandisk. type scandisk. if it finds errors, it will ask if you would like to fix them, of course click yes. If you do a surface scan it will take a long time depending on how large your disk drive is. you may also want to check to see if your partition is intacted. type fdisk and choose the option to view all partitions. if you partition is corupted you may be in for the long haul of reformatting. there is a program called partion magic. that may help.

here are some other basic dos commands that will allow you to move around.

dir - displays directories and files
dir/p - displays directorys in page form press any key to move on
cd - change directory "cd windows"


I can't beleive I am actually teaching sombody dos commands...hehe

is there anyway to make a backup disk or something. I know you can do the system recover but it doesnt help if i cant even get to the desktop. Unless theres someway to run that from dos. Please let me know if you can make a recover disk. Thanks

Making a copy of your data in dos will be a long and drawn out process. Pull the hard drive out put in a backup or put you hd into a machine that has a working HD and copy thew data you want to keep. once you have the data you want to keep format and reinstall on the corrupted drive. (that is if the drive is still good and only the OS crashed)

ok thanks i also heard you can make an image of your HD with norton ghost.
