Ok, what started out as a simple adventure to upgrade my system for the first time has turned into a death struggle with the forces of evil computing. Or something.
After working on it for eight hours, I'm out of energy, so please bear with me and read the following convo I just had with a friend:
Broohaha9: i think im going to cry
TaterrtoT: why?
Broohaha9: my computer is still f*cked up
Broohaha9: im never gonna be able to fix it
Broohaha9: i've wasted the last five days of my life
Broohaha9: and there is no end in sight
TaterrtoT: what's wrong with it?
Broohaha9: well not only did my 1 gig processor/mobo combo f*ck up completely
TaterrtoT: describe "f*ck up?
Broohaha9: but i FINALLY got my OLD system installed back in there (with a new HD) but for some f*cking reason i cant install win98 OR win2000
Broohaha9: f*ck up = it starts once
Broohaha9: and then it doesnt start again
TaterrtoT: did you use fdisk?
Broohaha9: yes
Broohaha9: i've formatted the f*cking hard drive like 10 times
Broohaha9: in fact, im here typing because i'm waiting for it to finish formatting right now
Broohaha9: so anyway everytime i try to install windows i get some BS error about an MS DOS dump error
Broohaha9: and i've used two different boot disks
Broohaha9: and i've formatted the thing many times
Broohaha9: and i've used win2k AND win98
Broohaha9: as the setup CDs
Broohaha9: so i've changed around every single thing i can think of and STILL i cant install windows
Broohaha9: and then, i tried to go back to my old hard drive, but my BIOS wont autodetect it
TaterrtoT: hmm
Broohaha9: when i set it as a master
Broohaha9: and will only detect it when i set it as a slave for some reason
So there you have it. This is a multi-faceted problem. The thing I MOST want to figure out is why the hell my supposedly upgraded mobo/processor combination won't work. In the past, the problem was that when I powered on my computer it didnt POST. It wouldn't let me alter BIOS settings or anything. I posted a question about it in the past on this board and got a good tip: to reset the CMOS by resetting the jumper and/or battery. I did that and, voila, the thing starts up again and I am able to enter BIOS! =) But then when I restart the computer, it goes dead and becomes unresponsive again. It does the same thing every time! It starts up once and then it stops! Then I reset the CMOS again and it didn't do anything but ten minutes later when I hooked it up again it DID start up. But then it stopped responding YET AGAIN! What gives!?
Ok, but forget about that for now. A more pressing concern is why my BIOS won't autodetect my old hard drive. When I set the jumper to "slave" it detects it as a slave but that does me no good cuz I can't run anything off it (or so I've been told). But when I set it to master, it doesn't detect a damn thing. What could be wrong? If I could just get my old hard drive back and working I would be so damn grateful.
As for my new hard drive (like I really needed 30 f*cking gigs) for some reason none of my setup options are working for me. I have a win2k setup CD and I get bubkus. When I run the setup.exe file from the top directory it says that this file cannot run in DOS mode. Fine, I try the I386 directory and lo and behold, when I run setup from there it works! But it only goes so far before giving me an MS DOS batch error of some sort and spitting out some code at me that reads: MXDR=3434 DJEI=3439 ... etc. or SOMETHING like that.
And when I try to run win98 (which I figure should be doable because I've done it in the past, even THAT gives me the same MSDOS error. I don't know what version of MSDOS the computer is reading or whatever but I change startup disks and get the same error, I format the hard drive and get the same error, and I try to use win2k OR win98 and I get the same error.
Sorry this was so poorly communicated and generally unintelligable but I am on my wit's end and completely flabbergasted. The last five days of my life have been a fastcomputerless-hell and I need my speedy computer back!
Any ideas?
