Edit: sarcasm alert

Yes, the conspiracy is true: Microsoft is undermining Windows 7 Update to force people to Windows 10.

But for some odd reason, a rogue employee decided to go ahead and greenlight a project to make Windows 7 update better and streamline the nightmarish scenario of applying 100s of updates for the ancient operating system.

It's not a service pack, but it's the next best thing, says Mary Jo Foley, notable journalist who has covered Microsoft for decades.

Despite the improvements to address issues raised by people struggling with Windows 7 outdated and clunky update process, the release of the so-called convenience update is merely a haze to confuse and distract people from the company's ultimate goal of forcing Windows 10 onto every device on the planet, including Android, iOS and old Blackberry phones, formatting their storage drives and greeting users with a smiling Microsoft Bob and a convenient 1-800 number to order a cutting-edge Lumia device running Windows 10 mobile.

About bloody time.. also they are releasing the non-security updates as rollups too so you do not need the previous updates

This is good news for those who need to deploy win7 for a while!!

the Catalog website is not really behaving in win8.1 so I had to download on a Win7 pc and you may have to disable protected mode in IE!

So do I understand this correctly? On a new Windows 7 install with SP1, you first have to install this Servicing update patch:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369

Then you can install the rollup.

After that is it best to install IE11? Then I assume you grab any patches that may have come out after the update...

I knew there was a reason why my old TRS-80 has started asking if I want to upgrade to Windows 10. Even my toaster has been affected, as it has started burning an 'X' shape onto my toast.

FYI -

Just had some time to try this out:

So first I installed Win7 w/ SP1

Then you first have to install this Servicing update patch:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3020369

Then installed the new Rollup Update.

Then checked for updates and had 56 important ones including IE11

Installed those and then checked again and installed 22 more.

Much faster than the standard method!!! very nice!

Now to figure out how to slipstream this rollup into windows and create a bootable installer...

I don't believe, even you use this alternative Win7 SP1 culmitive update on a fresh install of Win7 SP1, including KB3156417 (whatever MS says) that it will end the intrusive GWX and Telementy Updates from appearing in your next Win7 SP1 New Update list.

You still have to check your "Update History" and ensure that you do not have the unwanted updates and hide them accordingly every month.

To date this BAT File un-installs them but you also have to keep the BAT file up todate:

If the KB's show up in your MS UpDate - HIDE them. Doesn't mean they are not going to show with the next MS UpDates as MS is enforcing WinX and Telemetry!

Who know's if KB3156417 will end MS's GWX in Win7 - Doubt it will end Telemetry. Wait and see ;o)

You do realize that you can actually just change 2 or 3 registry entries[1] (or Group Policy settings) and disable the telemetry service for the same effect? The updates that you may have uninstalled may become prerequisites for future updates so outright uninstalling them is not a good idea.

Yes: Agree with the Group Policy tweak but is it included in this Alternative Win7 SP1 Cumulative update - Otherwise you got to do it manually and make a Key BackUp.

Should I spell it where Win 7 Pro an Ultimate has Group Policy feature or tweak the Registry.

Right now I have no idea what KB3156417 does other then it's setting in my Win7 optional MS update abeyance for this month.

Now to figure out how to slipstream this rollup into windows and create a bootable installer...

If using a USB install media its even easier, just mount the install.wim, inject the update, dis-mount the .wim and copy it back to the usb drive and overwrite the original file. Otherwise it would be the same steps but you would have to recreate the iso

Steps are here

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff794819.aspx

That should allow you to inject the convenience update to the wim image and that way it will be install at boot.

Although it says its for Windows 7 embedded, this works for all .wim images. This is the most clear instructions I found for how to do it.

Does the telemetry and Windows 10 installer business come along for the ride? Can those components be uninstalled after?

These are not security updates, and Windows 7 is not getting new features (being on Extended Support)... so what "future updates" will need these?

I figure we're OK until Windows Update starts saying "I'm sorry, I can't do that" when we try to do something other than "upgrade" to Win10.:D/:hmm:

I don't know what Microsoft is going to do in the future. I'm simply stating that they can release updates which have these as dependents and you may miss out on future security updates if you've uninstalled them. There are ways to disable the Windows 10 notifications and the telemetry service without having to uninstall anything so that approach is preferable to the alternative.

Screw Win10 - All I want is to migrate a clean install of Win7, which we are in titled to, by MS till 2020.

I bought into Win7 - A great OS that promised to migrate till the year 2020 and this GWX upgrade crap without migration is burning me out.

Ms has made the point were you don't want to make a Win7 update error or pay the price in the future for Win10 upgrade crap that can't migrate.

If a Win10 FREE upgrade from Win7 can authentically migrate to a new hardware platform as genuine lets hear it from Win 10 users and explain how it's done.

Seems to me "MS Delivers Windows 7 "Convenience Rollup" to soften update woes." is just a cover up and not officially released by MS.

Times running out ;o)
