MS blaster virus??

Ok, so my friend just got infected w/ the ms blaster virus, and it is now preventing her from getting online.

I called my IT place at school, and they said the only way is to reformat my computer, and then install the patch so it doesn't happen again.

two quesitons:

1. If my friend doesn't have the CD that came w/ the laptop, can I use my laptop's CD and use it to reinstall XP? Her computer(Toshiba) is korean, and is korean xp, and my computer is just regular english XP(for HP). Can I use my Recovery CD and give her english xp IF she can't find her original xp CD? Since my xp came w/ my hp laptop, I"m not sure if it is only for hp computers.....

2. The IT people said to go to school to get the Cd for the patch.......is there a way to get it online, so I can do this over the weekend?? I want to fix my pc asap...

tahnx

"shutdown -a" from command prompt and she'll be able to download patch.

well, so if I dont 'haev to reformat it, taht would be great......

where do I get teh patch??

everything you need is here: symantec

There is no need to reformat. You can use the removal tool to remove it, and then have someone burn the patch to a CD and you can install it from there. The patch is too big to fit on a floppy for XP(I think it's a bit over 1.3 meg).

You can go to Microsoft's site and DL the patch alone. That's what I did for my sister. She had the worm, couldn't use the Windows Update site. I DL'd the patch and emailed it to her. Problem solved.

Yeah, I gotta wonder about your school's IT department. And to think I'm still out of a job....... *sigh*

Who ever is on the IT at your college is lazy.

You may want to consult someplace like here about the virus.

If it is the Lovesan/blaster virus, then you can grab the XP or 2k Patch for the RPC service here.

I would also suggest downloading something like Stinger to scan your system and remove the virus.

Then you might want to put on her automatic updates for XP to auto download and install critical. And you might look into getting regular virus checking or look at a free solution like AVG

Hope this helps

The patch fits on a floppy. It did for me anyways.

So is this your computer, or hers? You seem to be flipflopping a lot here.

Um... well since you have a 32 bit computer.... 32 bit edition might work best!

Most likely you are using the 32bit version of XP.

If you are not having crashes with the RPC service, then it may or may not be blaster. Wont hurt to patch anyway. If you use the stinger (over the fixblast from norton), it will scan for about 30 or so different viruses that are currently floating around. Boot into safemode and run both Stinger and the patch from floppies. If the scanner comes up with nothing, then there might be other issues. If you boot to safe mode with network, you might be able to get on to windows update and do all the patches. Who knows. Give it a shot.

That is silly.

You can download the patch to a floppy disk from another computer. Also download the Blaster cleaning tool from symantec and fit that on a floppy. Install patch, reboot, run tool, reboot. Machine will be fine!

If they're telling you to reformat they have no clue. More info can be found at my new site 🙂

Back to the idea of you using your "restore disk" to re-install. That will do nothing for her/you. Most restore disks are ghost images/archived binaries that are thrown on the disk then just expanded back onto the disk in one giant automated process. She would not only get your English OS, but XP all set up for your hardware which may cause even more issues since it will be missing all the drivers for her unit.

Sometimes you run across companies(Dell) that mislabel OS disks that are true re-install disks (rather than restore CDs). Who knows that even if you do have a version of XP to use to re-install if the license key from her unit will even be valid for the copy type you are using (OEM, Corp, Retail).

So, try to fix the system. If not, you will need to either purchase XP or use pirated software to get the machine back up.
