help,
i've had some probs with the badtrans.b and klez.h viruses, and i tried to install mcafee virusscan 6.0. now my comp can't get to windows. it starts to load win 98 and justs keep trying. nothing happens. where do i go from here?

Boot into safe mode and try again. Or do what I would do, format, reinstall, and learn to use the computer correctly this time 😉

Not having common sense can be a pain eh? 😉

Doesn't it say not to install virus software if you think you have a virus?

I think klez disables anti-virus and firewall software. People need to start using some common sense when using a computer.

Klez is pretty icky. A friend of mine got it on his work computer and although he has removed it according to the instructions on Symantec's page I am still getting infected email from him, his dad and other people he had sent email to. Norton keeps poping up on my machine telling me I recieved another infected e-mail.

By far the easiest method would be to format and reinstall. But if the data really must be kept, try making a Rescue Floppy set on another machine (I'm assuming McAfee does this like Norton, but I've never tried). Make sure the definitions are current on the other machine first, of course. Boot to the rescue floppies and scan from there. For a good size disk, this can take a long, long time - several hours, at least. Really, reinstall if possible.

And, jeez, n0c... you could go a bit easier on a new poster than that. Everybody's got to learn sometime.

I had a 'similar' problem w/ McAfee 5.x and 98. McAfee worked fine with my old setup. After upgrading and fresh install, the system would hang on boot. Traced it to a line in the autoexec. Went into safe mode, opened sysedit, REMed out the line and rebooted. Runs fine now. For some reason I was getting a error level 1 from the McAfee. Never could figure out why. You could give that a try. Wish you luck.

I learned the hard way. Not having common sense is a pain, I know from experience.

firstly, i apologize for my naivete...
now, i'd love to get the comp into safe mode, but beyond the ability to get into my bios setup (or setup...) i cannot get the system to go beyond the win98 logo. the logo remains onscreen, but the comp seems to be processing info.
thta having been said, and understanding my limited computer knowledge and skills, what is my next best move? most of my info had been backed up, with the exception of a few (i guess) losable docs (which i need to graduate uni), but i'd ratheer not reformat...
however, if i MUST, i will

thanks for all your help. especially you n0c - i feel the love in your scoldings.

Find a friend. Get that friend to create a bootdisk for you. Norton and McAfee and whatnot create bootdisks to look for viruses and whatnot. Create one of those. Boot off of a normal bootdisk and backup as many of the files you need (that are not already backed up) as you can. Then boot off the nortonish bootdisk and cross your fingers. If that doesnt work, and no one else has suggestions, format. But you may want to consider formatting and reinstalling when you get a chance, even if the bootdisk thing does work.

Yes find a friend... but make it easier....

Have him/her protect their system properly then put your harddrive in their system and scan/clean it.... Either that or ONLY use the command line scanner that comes with McAfee and use a dos boot disk

If you do it from your windows installation Klez will probably find a way to stick around

You have a few options, but seeing how you are not very 'computer savvy'(no offense), the easiest way would be to 'skeleton boot'(my own stupid terminology😉) your system by using your boot disks that I know you made when you first got your system, right?
-turn computer off
-put boot disc in
-start computer up
-commence reformat
-problem solved

I personally find antivirri useless... Just another proggie running in the background, chewing up memory... But, hey, thats only MY opinion...

I wonder how many viruses you have had that you didnt know about... Maybe you should spend $50 and get some more ram 😉

There's a good example of the Ostridge syndrome, just keep your head in the sand & hope it passes you by. lol

Sorry for not being a newb AOL hax0r, But I've not had a serious problem with a virus in my 15 years or so with computers... Any problems I have encountered with 'vicious virri' were quickly solved with a wave of the hand 😉...It's not a matter of me being ignorant toward virri ...It's a matter of being a smart internet browser/file user etc... Youre all just jealous, and fear my powers 😀

The only virus I have gotten was from a friend, so being smart about things didnt work for me, being paranoid does. 😉

Thats like saying "i haven't had a flat tire in 10 years, so why carry a spare? its just extra weight and space I could use for something else...."

if U run windows you MUST run AV software.... to not do so is simply stupid.....

btw, U can get virii from other machines on the web that you do not download ANYTHING from (mail, files, etc...) remember Nimda? it looked for IIS servers to infect via the Web Folder Transversal vulnerability by sending malformed GET requests.... and dont say keeping up on the patches solves this since it took a while for MS to release it and you may have been screwed by then (AV companies had a response in about 12 hours)...

but i tell you what, go ahead and remain blissfully unaware of the software that others are running on your machine.... some people have to learn the hard way...
