It might be a good idea to give the big 3 the $25 billion now and wait till the economy recovers to go through the shock of chapter 11.

If we go chapter 11 now it will result in a ton of job losses and right now there are no jobs out there so it could be a disaster. But wait a year or two when the economy is growing and then thew job losses won't hurt as much.

Do you think $25 billion is enough to last until the economy recovers?
I doubt it, might need closer to $50 b to make it two years.

LOL WTF... YOU ARE FOR THIS? HELLOOOO we just spent $800 BILLION. Why do you think this will somehow make us better? Batshit crazy is the only thing that explains the situations that are going on

It is a lot more complicated than you may realize. No one ever wants to spend money to fix problems, but sometimes we are forced between a rock and a hard place where spending money to fix a problem is inevitable. As I have already emphasized numerous times in this thread, I am not in support of simply writing a 25b check and sitting on the issue. However, I do recognize that we need to do something because if these businesses truly fail and end up having to file Ch. 7 sometime sooner than later then the government is going to have to spend much more than 25b of YOUR tax dollars in order to control the situation at that point through social services over the course of god knows how long before we get all of those people employed again. Not to mention that the long term effects on their kids could potentially end up costing us even more money in various ways as well as putting this country just that much further behind the rest of the world. We need to be efficient which means we need to make solid decisions, but we also need to accept that whatever we do it most likely boils down to choosing the lesser of many evils. All of which are going to cost us tax dollars somehow.

The reason I started this thread was to solicit ideas for what, if anything, the Federal government should do about the current economic crisis. I gathered from other threads that a lot of people were unhappy with what Mr Bush has done so far and with what Mr Obama is saying he wants to do.

But so far in this thread I have not read any constructive suggestions or solutions. Is it that you do not think there is an economic crisis and or that the Federal government should do nothing and let things happen?

I see ghost of H Hoover.....

As we can all see opinions on the matter vary greatly but there's one thing that I think that we can all agree on. Things are going to get much worse before they will get better. Many people will lose their jobs, probably many of us will be in that group. I don't see things improving for several years.

I believe that the biggest difference between the great depression and now is the fact that in our global economy everybody is tied together, intertwined at every level. Plus people today are used to a soft cushy lifestyle whereas people back in the day had it harder without the amenities we all take for granted now. They were better able to weather the conditions unlike the give it to me now generation that exists today.

I fully expect to see an explosion of crime as the have nots percieve that it's their right to take from those who they've deemed as having enough to share. When that time arrives you can expect for things to turn very ugly. Look at how much crime has been committed during the good times as it will give you some idea of how bad it could get when things turn really bad.

fvck bailouts. No more sending money to companies with broken management and business models. And no more handouts or tax cuts, most people are fearful of the down turn and is more likely to save than spend.

What Obama need to do is start spending money on this country's infrastructures, only allow companies with majority US presence to bid on projects. People seem to have forgotten about the bridge collapse in twin city already, as well as the last big electric outage in the north east. This country's infrastructure needs help, and spending money on those infrastructure will help US economy. Killing two birds with one stone.

Stop the bailouts and rescue programs. Give every taxpayer a 25K stimulus check and nothing else. The only thing that I would like to see is affordable healthcare for all .

If it was Socialism the Big Three would be run by some govt official getting his ass handed to him in the media a long time ago for screwing up the company.

I am sure a few people would be in jail too.

Just quit with the bailout/Socialism stuff, just call it for what it is -capitalism in crisis.

fire about 50% of corrupt and wasteful Govt figureheads. Limit terms...exterminate lobbyists, and have a better checks and balance system....oh, and quit buying friendships that provide nothing in return...how about focusing on the USA instead of everyone else?
