That being said, why doesn't he drop some of his personal spending money on a decent haircut and a personal trainer? :D

Sure, MS isn't perfect, but I highly doubt that computers would be the mainstream (and relatively cheap) thing they are now had MS not existed, or crushed their competition. It just wouldn't be possible.

And the fact that this guy donates such huge sums of money is impressive; damned impressive.

Bill Gates kicks ass.
He's responsible for a huge portion of the technological revolution we're now engaged in, and he's a philanthropist of the highest order.
The guy will be in history books as the greatest technological leader ever.
Good or bad, you can't help but respect his accomplishments.

<Insert rambling socialist rant about how all rich people are evil and capitalism sucks and how anyone making above $50k a year should have their excess income taxed and redistributed>

that would mean he would stop being in charge of everything and would be controled by what "other" people might think, that would ruin us geeks! .. I mean look at all those linux users, and then look at the famous linux developers. They give the common people hope :D

Andrew Carnegie was a ruthless sweatshop bastard. He'd have killed his Grandma if there was a nickel in it. His philanthropy was all about his image and supporting his self-appointed God status. It had nothing to do with his love for mankind.

400M in pounds and 750 in dollars.

For a guy so rich, i hope he invests some money in graphic Cards and then we will have a true 3 way battle.

Imagine..

Microsoft MLX-950 Extreme at newegg for $600 and Bill gates edition for $ 1000.

lolz

than MLX-950 Extreme softmod to Bill gates edition and save $ 400.

I dunno if they ever would go that route again. They used to make wireless products, but quickly exited the market.

Then again, their keyboard/mousing line is highly respected.

Wonder how much Microsoft spends on advertising each year? Perhaps the 400 million is merely an advertising expense for Bill, with the aim being to build a good name for himself and/ or Microsoft in the US and globally. It's winning you over, where no amount of Microsoft commercials ever have.

How has he screwed us over, exactly?

Compared to most human beings, Gates is a god.

Sure they would, they'd just all come out of Cupertino instead of Redmond.
