mpg123 vs xmms

I have been having problems recently with mpg123. It is playing mp3's jumpy with occasional static too while xmms is playing clean with no problem at all. While running mpg123, there is no constraint on cpu or ram. Any suggestions or do I have to live with this? Also, any suggestions for a different text-based mp3 player since I really don't want to be using an X mp3 player.

mpg123 isn't free. Switch to mpg321.
