.mpg file problem

I hope this is the right forum to post this question. Anyway here's my problem, I have used the ATI MMC 7.7 to record several TV programs in the "Video CD" format, which resulted in .mpg files. Last weekend I had to reformat my machine, and after reinstalling all the softwares that I had before, some of these files just won't play at all.

I've tried any softwares I can think of (Windows Media Player, Quicktime, DivX player, even ATI's own file player), still some of the files just won't play back at all. I tried installing some of the codecs packs, but none helps either.

Is there any way I can find out what exactly I need to play these files?
Is there an .mpg file analyzer out there (similar to the G-Spot codec analyzer)?

VCD is MPEG1 and SVCD is MPEG2, that's the codec so there's no need for something like G-Spot. If you don't have a DVD player installed you probably don't have a MPEG2 codec, not sure about MPEG1, I use mplayer on Linux and it plays just about everything with no hassels.

try media player classic (google it)

I dont have a dvd player installed but I can play dvd's and svcd's just fine in it.. welll.. not svcd's the player craps out on me after about 60% playback so then I have to restart it reload the movie, find the spot I was on and continue watching
