mpg are so huge!

and so is DIVX but mpg quality are the worst of all. converting them both to wmv, time consuming but saving me plenty of space and easier to share with other people using DC. problem is, i can't convert avi divx to wmv, why won't wmv encoder 7.1 let me?

wmv is probably the worst video codec on the planet. divx can be made pretty small.

wmv encoder won't do it because a divx avi isn't standard avi format

I don't really like DIVX but why would anyone bother converting videos to another format?

mpg can be made high quality if the people who do the capture care what they are doing.
After that, most can be reprocessed to smaller files.
DVDs are mpg, so the standard for quality covers a large range.

You can read and convert Divx with tools like Virtualdub, but that will add an extra step to your process.
