MPEG2 to divx conversion

I'm trying to convert something that I captured from my TV tuner card in MPEG2 (that's the only format it can do, and it does it in hardware) to a divx file to save space. Currently the 70 minute file is 2.2GB. That isn't going to fit on a CD.

The basic format is a single .mpg file that is 640x480 w/ the audio in MP3 sampled at 32kHz (just one file mind you)

So far all the programs I have tried have:
1: Expected an ac3 audio and vob video file that was ripped from a DVD
2: crashed 100% of the time (flask 0.594, 0.6 when I choose a codec)
3: generated massive audiosync problems (vidomi)
4: generated files larger than the original, that wouldn't play smooth on a 1Ghz Athlon (flask 0.6 when I try uncompressed audio)

Again note: the video is not coming ripped from a DVD in any way.

your tuner card does hardware..... I don't think so.

does it absolutely have to play from a cd.... with cheap HD space I winRAR files that are 2GB onto a cpl of cd's and uncompress them to HD when need be, that way I still have high quality and one single file.

If I need compression, as for MPEG2.... I use either Vegas or Video Factory to render them to Windows Media Video v8 which is much better than divx for compression/quality. I have them preset in my settings as to how much time/quality/file size will fit on a normal cdr or rw. You just have to test this yourself.

It does, and my CPU usage shows it. Both the Haupagge WinTV-PVR and the Creative Labs Digital VCR do hardware MPEG2 encoding. (I have the latter)

I plan on saving this to a CD for archives as well as sending this off to family. The target size is about 300-400MB (medium quality divx)

I've used Gordian Knot (get it here ) with great success. I use it to compress my Mpeg-2 captures from my AIW to Divx. LMK if you need help with the workflow and I'll hook you up with the method I use.

I stan corrected, they do say "onboard hardware MPEG-2 recording engine" I didn't know that anyone had a Hardware MPEG2 card yet. and for $99 how can that be ???

I still think that WMV has much better compression and video quality than any divx.
