MPEG2 capturing w/ 64MB Radeon

Has anyone captured any video using the VIVO features of the 64MB Radeon? What would the average size be for say a 24min or 50min clip? I've heard that to capture at 15mbs I would need a faster hard drive, and if thats the case, I'll just toss another 45gb in here and go raid. Please let me know with your experiences.

Thanks

I don't think you'll need to go RAID, a hard drive that can sustain 20MB/s will do just fine. Before I got my SCSI setup I captured video on a 5400RPM WD hard drive without any problems.

Not sure what OS you're running though, my Win2K SP1 and latest ATI drivers ALWAYS crashes when I try to capture any video, but WinME works fine.

Good luck

I've used the AIW Radeon for video capture, should be similar. Your hardrive is fast enough, but you might want the extra 45gb(I do!) for a capture drive.<What would the average size be for say a 24min or 50min clip?> Do the math, depending on the quality you want, mpeg-2 figure anywhere from 2mb/s to 8-10mb/s x 60 seconds x 24-50 min. Adds up fast, even faster if you capture uncompressed frames.

I use win2ksp1 and I can capture 720x480 mpeg-2 with no dropped frames, so Ferrari, if you need some help, I can try to set you up. If you do use win2k you can set an NTFS partition to capture to and avoid the file size limits, a big plus for video capture.

This would be going into my dual CPU machine so for now I'm running Win2k.

Are you sure thats right? I use flaskmpeg and bbmpeg and I resample vob files into mpeg2 files, and I can turn a 2 hour dvd into a 3GB 720x480 mpeg2 file.

I've got a friend that uses a dazzle video creator 2 (i think thats what it is) and he is able to fit a full simpson's episode onto 1 cd. Which is my goal as well, (not simpsons but other shows, and I mean old shows)

rbV5, I have 2 18GB SCSI hard drives, primary is WinME FAT32 and the Win2K is NTFS. I don't really want to partition the drives for various reasons, but I'm only planning to capture 5 or 10 minute movies, nothing more.

I have tried both the latest ATI official drivers (3102) and the latest BETA (3116), MM Center 7.1, DirectX 8.0a. Every time I press the capture button the whole computer freezes, which is unusual in Win2K. The card is not overclocked (although the CPU is, but very stable), and I have reinstalled the OS a few times so I doubt this is caused by some corrupted driver, although it's possible.

JoeDaddy, sorry for posting this here but this may benefit you as well.

JoeDaddy, you used 15mb/s, I was just giving you quick examples, you are working with *.vob files(mpeg-2) so you know how big they are, and I have a pretty good divx movie that fits on 1 CD, so we all know how small they CAN get. Here is a good site VCD Help that may help.

Ferrari, did you install DVD 4.1?

rbV5, I did not install DVD 4.1, I use WinDVD for that. Would installing DVD 4.1 help anything? When I installed MM Center 7.1 I ONLY installed the Video In option, nothing else because I don't use it.

Which drivers and MM Center do you use?

I use the 3124 drivers with MMC 7.1 and DVD 4.1. I also use the "ati2mtag.sys" file from the 3073 driver set, but I've heard that with the new MMC and DVD 4.1 that is not necissary. I have heard that installing the new ATI DVD player fixes video capture problems for some.
