I've recorded a CART race and is now trying to edit out comercials and stuff.
It is recorded to mpg VCD standard to be burned to a VCD.
It should be possible to edit with TMPGEnc (I belive) but it just locks up. My second attempt was with VirtualDub but I can't se any way to save the file in mpg VCD format. Have I missed something.

Do I have to convert to DivX and then convert back to VCD? Seems a little overkill to me.

<----- Not very experienced with this stuff.

Go to www.vcdhelp.com , they have an excellent guide on how to cut & merge mpeg1 files using TMPGEnc. I do this alot and I know how hard it is when first getting started. I now have made over 200 VCD's and it's second nature. This site helped me alot and they have a forum where you can post also. Hope this helps.

I have used that site, ecellent. But as I said, TMPGEnc crashes when I try to open the file I want to edit.
Gives me a floating point error.
I am running a Celeron 500.

Open TPMGEnc and in the options settings click on the environmental settings, the far right tab VIFAPI plugin click on it, Make sure all boxes are checked and raise the priority by left clicking on it, these in order from top to bottom. In other words you want higher priority on these from top to bottom: Top: AVI2 File reader, next AVI VFW compatibility reader, Direct Show media reader, Wave File reader, and after that the order make little difference, just make sure they are all checked. See if that stops the crashing. Good luck! Also make sure you have the latest version of TMPGEnc. Hope this info helps.

I got it to work this evening. The MPEG tools in TMPGEnc did the job fine. However I like the feel and accuracy of the editor in VirtualDub better.
The result was OK. The caption was made with a ATi TV-Wonder VE with the settings for VCD quality. I didn't have enough disk-space to capture with maximum quality. The result is OK but not fantastic. A standard VHS looks better, but I could have made it better if I'd maxed out the settings and burned a SVCD instead. I am not sure if the SVCD would have been playable in the DVD player.

Damn, need a new HD soon.
Thanks for the help.

Glad I could help. I learned the hard way on those settings, just played around till I found the winning combo. Go to vcdhelp.com and download Tibro's vcd template and play with the settings and you can get great results. Mine are as good as VHS easily.
