MPEG1 to DVD

I'm having problems converting some TV episodes I've downloaded that were mpeg1's. They play just fine on a computer but a lot of them have errors. You can see them as pixelated glitches. When re-encoding them in an app such as TMPGenc it will give an error that it can't continue or will hang the encoder. Trying to use them straight up without re-encoding will hang TMPG DVD Author. It seems the errors in the mpg (or maybe even the sound) stream craps out either the muxing or demuxing of the file.

I haven't tried editing them in a video editor suite. Only tried re-encoding them in a dedicated mpg1/2 encoder. Any and all suggestions welcome.
