MPEG transport stream codec?

I am capturing digital TV off the air on one machine, and I need to play the files on another. I can convert the transport stream files into an mpeg that plays fine on my "recording machine" but it won't play on the playback machine. Is there a video codec that I need to install to play these files? I guess I thought that they were just MPEG2 videos....
