Mpeg / avi Running to fast

I'm helping out a friend with her new computer. Everything seems to work allright except that videoclips and movies in all formats (or at least mpeg and avi) run much to fast. They seem to run at the maximum speed the computer is capable of

Does any one here have any suggestions of what might be the cause of this ? (Watching movies at 100-200 fps is not fun!)

some vid programs (power dvd for example) have a slider to set the playback speed. look for something like that or try setting the defaults in the program your trying to use .
