Do such machines exist? Could I buy something that can play MPEG-4 files burned ontoa DVD-R?

Sure they exist, my computer can do that.
I mean a nice box with a remote control that I can put under my TV.
Hey, my Shuttle (w/ USB ATI remote) can do that.

Just come over to my place. My Xbox can do that. Hell, I don't even need to burn it. It streams from my computer.

A few dvd players (Kiss brand) can do this. I believe the system only has a dvd-rom and a decoder card...sells for around $100. link

Mine does too!! If you are looking at getting a MPEG-4 Player, you should seriously look into a modded xbox. There is so much more that you can do with it. Mine sits in my entertainment center as my mp3/mpeg-4/mame/emulator box.

I suppose you could even play xbox games on it........

Huh? I have an Xbox (unmodded) and it plays music CDs... are you saying that modding it makes it unable to read CDs?
