mpeg-2 encoding problem with creative digital vcr

Hello, when i use creative's built in mpeg-2 encoder, i can create the mpeg file, but upon playback there is no audio... do i just need new audio codecs? if so, once i burn this file and try to play it back on a dvd player, will the strange audio of this file inhibit playback? please explain...
