The problem, they say, is teenagers who instant message their friends with their verdict on new films - sometimes while they are still in the cinema watching - and so scuppering carefully crafted marketing campaigns designed to lure audiences out to a big movie on its opening weekend.

But wait, I thought pirates are the reason movies aren't selling?

I can see to possible outcomes

1) Movie studios start making better movies
2) Studios force theatres to install cell phone jammers and make people sign NDAs before going to see the movie.

Somehow I think th latter is more likely...;)

So, is the MPAA going to sue cell-phone manufacturers/providers for lost income/profits?

Well, why not? They're suing everyone else.

text messaging? hell, it might just be BBSes like this... i come on here and post a thread "this movie sucks" and 10 other people chime in with how bad it is, well, we've just reached 10,000 people or whatever. and they tell people they know the movie sucked. or people check rottentomatoes.

i find it funny that they make a crappy movie and then blame text messaging for not being able to dupe other people into seeing it. Maybe it should be illegal for Ebert and Co. to write that the movie is crap in the newspaper then?

You mean they can't make millions duping us into seeing the same old crap? Sucks to be them... maybe if they actually made a good movie for once.

On the flip side, I wonder if text-messaging increases the success of good movies?

Hmmmm... :strokes beard: ;)

and don't forget the Technology is criminal, now they'll start jailing Cell phone users because they stole their profits.

All very good rebuttals everyone, thanks Konichawa for the link to that article.

This also reminds me of the time a buddy and I saw Mothman Prophecies in the theater. When we got back, we tried to convince everybody it was the best movie ever just so everyone else would go out and watch it, too.

Cell phone jammers are illegal.. but you can have walls that really restrict the signal and say its for sturdiness or something..

They'll make it a felony to break their NDA's along with using cellphones. Either of which will result in a $10,000 dollar fine and a mandatory 5 year federal prison sentence. All pushed through and approved by their lobbying power/influence in congress because we're all theives.
