well, the Fraunhofer Institute have completed their new codec.
mp3PRO does 2 passes, 1 is for high-pitched sounds

unfortunately, there isn't a codec, it seems Thomson Multimedia SA has worked out a partnership with Fraunhofer for unique rights.

you can download their free player/encoder (plays mp3 files, but to enjoy the mp3PRO format you must use their player)
DOWNLOAD FREE PLAYER HERE
This would've been sooooo cool if bought into as much as mp3 was. Especially with a VBR mp3PRO encoder.

I've installed the proggie - you can only encode at 64kbps - which will give you...... 128kbps quality
&/or
64kbps quality + half-the average file size

not good enough for me, maybe if they offered free 128kbps encoding (320kbps quality at same filesizes as 128kbps now) I would switch, but I won't for a couple reasons.

[*]128kbps still isn't enough to encode very "busy" music. My electronica & lots of hip-hop sound like sh!t on mp3, sometimes even at 160kbps.
[*]DRM isn't built in - but the option is there. :(

guys, this really sucks!!!!
I was awaiting this so I could start re-ripping all my tracks, & now I find out I wasted my time & should've been using a high-quality VBR encoder all along :(

i read in an article online that Thomson was going to be the sole provider - or at least that's the impression I got. :(

The best EAC is the newest... www.exactaudiocopy.de

For lame, go to the r3mix forum... http://r3mix.net/forum and you can learn all about lame. Right now I'm using lame 3.88b1 with 3dnow support. Somewhere on r3mix's forums theres a thread with a link to a lame with 3dnow support for amd chips. You get 11% speed improvement. 3.88b1 is the best lame out right now... don't be freaked cause it says beta. 3.89alpha is out but their still workin on it alot.

Generally the latest versions. EAC seems to be in beta forever, but I haven't had any problems with 0.9 prebeta 9 (prebeta 10 out today!). LAME 3.88 is what most people use, and the news page at r3mix.net will give you the best options for quality/size sweet spot.

<< Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in dark rooms munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. >>

Isn't that a rave?

ok, for EAC I grabbed prebeta 10 the new release because it offers options for different naming for albums with various artists :) (read: mixed DJ albums :D)

if anyone has a link for that LAME that's AMD enhanced, LMK
