WinAmp bug opens door to MP3 viruses

"A glitch with the popular WinAmp software for playing digital music files could allow an attacker to embed malicious code into an MP3 file, potentially damaging the user's PC and infecting other MP3s.

Nullsoft, which makes WinAmp, has confirmed the vulnerability, which does not affect the newest version of the software. Version 2.80 of WinAmp is available on NullSoft's Web site. The problem can also be fixed by disabling WinAmp's minibrowser."

Huh? WTF for?!?

Anyway, is there any good reason for using ID3 tags anyway? I was wondering because I'm about to start encoding all my CDs onto my file server and anything that I could put in the ID3 tags, I normally put in the directory name (artist, title, year of release) or the name of the MP3 file itself.

If there's any compelling reason to use the tags, then I'll consider doing it.

if i remember right, it even asks you this when installing, and it's there in the winamp options. you can turn it off if you like.

i see no point in it, and no one has come up with any compelling reason that i should use them. in fact i strip the tags out of all my mp3's, then just give the filename a name like this: Artist - Song Name.mp3. that way, most any mp3 player (any that i use) just strip off the .mp3. tags are annoying.
