WinAmp bug opens door to MP3 viruses

"A glitch with the popular WinAmp software for playing digital music files could allow an attacker to embed malicious code into an MP3 file, potentially damaging the user's PC and infecting other MP3s.

Nullsoft, which makes WinAmp, has confirmed the vulnerability, which does not affect the newest version of the software. Version 2.80 of WinAmp is available on NullSoft's Web site. The problem can also be fixed by disabling WinAmp's minibrowser."

Why'd they ever include that god awful waste of software they call the minibrowser, anyway?

Is this in version 2.79 only? I'm running an older version (2.76) and wonder if I even need to upgrade

That's why I still use a pre-mini browser version of it :)

<< I just use M$'s media player. Built in, saves disc space. >>

Uses more ram/system resources. May possibly report what media files you're playing with it. But hey, you're saving 1.9MB on your drive (winamp basic is 1.9mb...)

It's there to display IDV3 tag information about the artist, allow you to go shopping at CDnow for the music, etc. Winamp has to make some money some-how... give em a break.

Thanks! Anyone know whether WinAmp 2.80 installs any spyware? (since most freeware apps seem to these days)

Thanks for the heads up.. although I never have the minibrowser enabled anywhere, and Zone Alarm isn't going to let Winamp talk to anything. :)

One of your mp3's takes up more space than winamp.... "Built in, saves disc space" Is that MS propaganda? :)
