mp3 to ringer ID

can anyone tell me how to do this on my motorola razr v3xx? I downloaded music to my phone, but when I try to set a ringer ID for one of my contacts, the music I downloaded in mp3 format is not available. this is terribly annoying and I can't seem to find a way to make it work. help?

Think it depends on your carrier also, may want to mention that part. I know a few lock out MP3s for ringtones, they force you to pay for them.
