What type of tagging does iTunes use? Is it its own special type for its ipod or what? The reason why i'm asking is because I've been using it but don't want to lock myself into buying an iPod just because i'm too lazy to retag everything and such.

I don't think it would use anything other than the standard mp3 tags. And the same would go for any other format it can handle.

If you don't have an iPod, why are you using iTunes? I find that it really sucks at being just a desktop jukebox. I like winamp much better.

yeah, itunes is BY FAR the best general use music player ive ever used. winamp sucks- much less intuitive browsing.

Don't forget the ease of editing tag file information...Which brings me back to the question...What type of tagging is it?

Ok. I'm gonna air all my greivances against iTunes. I've been looking for a place to do it since I got my iPod and you've given me the opportunity. :)

1. Playlists are hard to manage
-it only allows me to list them in alphabetical order, I wanna do it by artist/date
-double clicking on a playlist allows you to edit the playlist name. What do you do more often: listen to the playlist or change its name? Name editing should be on a menu somewhere.

2. It treats you like an idiot, like you can't manage your own files
-it doesn't let you specify the names of the songs that you rip or where they get stored.
-I started with "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" unchecked because I don't want it moving my stuff around on me
-I ripped a cd and it put it in some illogical folder structure with filenames that weren't particularly human friendly
-So I checked "Keep...Organized"
-now it moves songs out of the folders that I had them in into it's own choices, not as bad as the first situation but not good
-now it's more or less impossible to use winamp because there's no guarantee anything will stay where I put it

3. As a simple player it sucks
-as stated above, I don't like the playlist management
-it's "minimized" interface sucks
-wmp is the best because you can make it into that little toolbar on your taskbar
-winamp is almost as good because you can align it nicely with other desktop elements, it will stay on top always, and it's display is very compact and featureful
-iTunes has this grey box with huge buttons and tonnes of wasted space that hardly gives you any info (one display line at a time and it scrolls)

It's one saving grace, as far as I'm concerned, (and this is weird) is that it works better with my microsoft keyboard (the play/pause, stop... buttons) than winamp does and winamp works better than wmp ever did. In conclusion, winamp isn't perfect but at least it lets you control stuff yourself so you're not forced to do what it feels like having you do.

There, glad to get that off my chest. I feel better now :p you all have permission to hate me if you disagree.
