MP3 players - how long to wait before investing in a player?

Someone stole my toshiba gigabeat (old school, non-video) and I'm on the fence about buying a good, 30gb+ player or just getting a stop gap solution (such as the 5gb creative labs muvo2 for $99) and waiting for a next gen player. Should the next generation of players come out in a month or two or should I just buy something mid-to-high-end now?

lol. "Next gen players', lol. hahaha. Yes because the next gen features everything you could think of except a way to find a girlfriend.... Looking for something that plays music? Buy a used iriver or what ever, I can't believe people actually upgrade music players, you either get something that plays only music or you get a PDA/Smartphone, wtf is this crap in the middle?

Depends. If iPod rocks your socks, then you can get Apple refurbished 30GB video for $199.00 shipped. If you want more features, either Gigabeat S or Zen Vision :M can be had for less then $250.00

If you want to be locked into Apple, get an iPod, if you want future choice, get something else that supports .wma DRM. This assumes you may purchase music off the internetat some stage.

I just picked up a Sandisk Sansa E270 and I think it's pretty nice. Flash based, so long runtime, and not as fragile as a HD based one. It plays MP3, WMA, movies, FM radio, and has a voice recorder. It also has a miniSD expansion slot if you want to add more memory down the line.

It's a slick little player IMO, and I've been enjoying it so far...

:)

Features microSD? expansion slot for additional memory capacity

But otherwise I'd say it would appear to be a good player.

What's wrong with microSD?

I don't understand why people buy ipods. From a price/performance/features perspective, you can't do much worse.

Smaller capacity, just like mini SD compared to regular SD. At the moment, the largest micro SD is 1GB, 2GB for mini and 4GB for SD.

I, for one, like my ipod. It is a tool, that plays music, and mine has been compeltely reliable. There also is not another player on the market that comes even remotely close to the ipod when it comes to aftermarket accessories. It does what I need it to do, and I am very happy with it, and that is all that matters. I would rather not have an mp3 player at all than have something other than the ipod I currently own.
