Does anyone know of a solution to hook an MP3 player with Ethernet (big requirement) up to a stereo? I mean....other than the SpiMP3 from Sonic Blue? I can't believe they're the only ones with this type of device. Anyone know of another manufacturer?

Spend $250 and get a cheap PPC2002 based PDA and dump a CF nic in it.

that's going to sound like ass on a stereo

The sound quality on my Audiovox Maestro is comparable to the sound out on my sony diskman.

Thanks, but I'm actually looking for something for hardware designed to do this, not something that can be adapted to do this (ie- palm PCs, small footprint pc's, etc).

AudioRequest

Selling for $799, the Audio Request is a rack sized box measuring 17" x 14" x 4". Made of heavy gauge steel, the body is ready for professional use if needed. The unit contains a 17.3GB hard drive, enough to hold roughly 6,400 songs at the standard 128 Kbit compression setting.

little pricey

and that compares how exactly? The diskman is solely for the reproduction of music. I don't really think the makers of a PPC are going to put quaility audio components on their PPCs

HERE is a cheaper, yet different approach.

Thanks, but I'll add one more requirement-----the cost of the device has to be LESS than my monthly house payment :)

Why not just buy one of those bookshelf PC's for $150 that are roughly the size of a laptop, dump a 120 gig HD in there for another $120, add a SB live value for $25, a nic for $15, stick it behind your entertainment center, and just control it with VNC or something.

US Robotics make a similarly priced, better unit, but these are basically transmitter/receivers, which wouldn't be practical (the server PC would be upstairs, while the stereo would be downstairs). Thanks though. Anyone else know of a device that does the same thing as the SliMP3? I can't beleive they're the only ones that thought of this!

I've thought about doing this as well.

Couldn't you just buy an old laptop (like 120mhz or less, on ebay, nothing at all fancy), but in a nic, and get a 10gb hd, and use that as well?

That's what I was planning on doing at least.

you could, but the entire system is riding on the quality of the audio outs on the laptop, if you got an exgity your problem would be solved

what about building a cheap, small computer with a nice looking case?

I can't believe no one has mentioned the Turtle Beach Audiotron.. It has a ton of really useful features (built-in web server!), is firmware upgradeable (and TB is good at putting out new FW), and to top it all off it's only $250. I have one in my house and have installed a bunch at work and for other people.

The one caveat? You need to have the mp3s/wmas stored elsewhere on your network. In my eyes this is yet another bonus, because you're not limited to HDD size, plus they're also accessible to all your computers as well.

I give these devices my highest recommendation. Check 'em out.

Again...I don't want a device that can be adapted to do the job...I want a device DESIGNED to do the job. A laptop or PC would require too much input, upgrades, and would look gaudy on my stereo rack.

Love2chill....THAT'S IT!!!!! THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR!!! Thanks a ton man!
