mp3 player or pocket pc?

I'm trying to recommend a friend either a pocket pc or an mp3 player. I feel that a pocket pc gets her more for the money because it (Dell x50v) has a nice big VGA screen for movies and pictures, and can also play music, open and edit excel, word, photos, etc, and act as an organizer. The only downside is storage won't nearly be the size of HDD mp3 players, and the size will be a bit bigger. As far as prices go, the price of this pocket pc ($250 + $150 for 8GB flashdrive) is about the same price as a good mp3 player.

Is my assessment accurate, or are there things about current mp3 players that I'm overlooking?

I've found the sound quality of most PDAs to be sorely lacking. Quick access to the device is a bit clumsier than most mp3 players. I may be wrong, but wouldn't the battery life be pretty short on a PDA playing mp3s as well? I'd love a good convergence device, but unfortunately, there's always one or 2 things that are seriously hampering to its operation (usually battery life is one).

I would just get an iPod and when he needs it to get a ppc, thats what i did. You can store much more on an iPod and loup garou pointed out a good fact taht you'll be hampered by battery life.

I personally think that size and weight is more than a fair tradeoff for all the extra things a pocket pc can do over an mp3 player, hence why personally I'm leaning towards the pocket pc. As for battery life, I think the x50v should get at least 5 hours of battery life just playing mp3, considering the screen is off, the processor is clocked way down, etc.

PDAs are fun if you like gaming in public toilets. Other than that, go with an MP3 player. I'm too cheap to buy an ipod. I have a RIO s10 (won at a tradeshow)....I suggest checking out the RIO players. They run off a single AA battery and use SD for memory....which means you can have 512MB to 1GB of data on those things. Best part is you don't have to worry about hard drive failure or rechargable battery replacement. A single battery lasts me weeks of workout time or flights. They're good players for the money....Overstock had a few models for $39 refurb a while back.

I own an x50v and while it makes an excellent mp3 player and vid player, it's definietly NOT pocket friendly. If your friend plans on carrying it around, get a standard mp3 player.

I also own a Dell Axim x50v, did you get in on the $262 sale last year with 2nd battery and upgraded warranty?

I totally agree with your post though. My Axim gets the most use on the commute to/from work, it's an easy way to kill 30 minutes for each leg of the trip.

If the primary use will be mp3 playing, it's a no brainer - go with an mp3 player. Some mp3 players even have bare essential PDA functions, like contacts and calendars. I own both and almost never use my pocket pc. The fact is that it is just not very useful unless you are travelling a lot or don't have access to outlook remotely.

My vote is for the pocket pc. I've got a x51v. With the VGA screen and wifi, it's like carrying a mini laptop around with you.

Pros:
It allows me to:
surf the web through my phone (Bluetooth + Dial up networking),
surf the web through Wifi access points (Starbucks)
use as a car GPS with a bluetooth GPS addon
watch a movie
listen to MP3s
play games
view documents
check my email
and of course, keep organized

Cons:
Battery life is not great. I might have to get an extended battery
It's bigger than your typical MP3 player

if it's for a chick, which you say it is, then go with the mp3 player.
the pros you mentioned for the pda is all gadgety unless you use it consistently and will appeal to that type of enthusiast.

seriously up until recently my pda has been sitting around gathering dust. if you want to play mp3s, just get a real mp3 player. no use in all-in-ones....jack of all trades, master of none
