mp3 player not recognized as a drive :(

I have a Sandisk mp3 player and when I plug it in, it's supposed to show up as a drag and drop accessible device in "My Computer".

I plug it in and Windows Media Player recognizes it and asks if I want to transfer, but in "My Computer", it won't show up.

It shows up fine on my laptop though.

Any clue?

Do you have the same OS on your desktop vs. your laptop, you might check Microsoft support or Sandisk for an update for your player.

This is just a guess, Media Player might be "taking control" of the player because it's a media device.

Does it behave like this regardless of which USB port it is plugged into?

Hope that helps.

I got it fixed. Not really knowing what was the cause, I looked through the menu in my player. I found a USB sub-menu which gave me choices of Auto Detect and MSC.

I tried setting to MSC and it worked!. I searched the issues and apparently, the presence of Windows Media Player 10 forces the MTP compatible players to go into MTP mode. The other computer doesn't have WMP 10, which explains the story.

MSC means Mass Storage device Class. Its the format used by USB devices so that Windowws sees the device as a removable disk or removable media. Examples are digital cameras, external HDDs and optical drives, flash and thumb drives, etc. While it was on Auto Detect, it did just that and yeah, WMP10 took it over at that point.
