mp3 player brands/models to stay away from?

1st of all, if there is a better place to ask this ?, let me know.

I am finally thinking of buying an mp3 player and have no idea which brands are crap and which have good reps. I tried searching on epinions but the volume of available models etc is overwhelming. Im looking for a moderately large storage capacity (something like 5 gigs or more) and preferably under $200. If any of you have had bad experiences w/ any particular brand or model, I'd like to hear about it.

Thx a lot,

Joe

seems like a lot of other brands can be found for cheaper, theres some deals on FW right now for the rio Carbon for ~168. Doesn't sound too bad from the reviews I read.

I've had nothing but good things to say about my iRiver. I can't remember the model name...it's the 512mb flash model. Bought it last year.

I also have a 512MB flash iriver and love it, great interface, awesome sound quality (with good headphones), it comes with a wrist strap and belt strap (great if you exercise). Im still on my 1st AA and i got it 2 weeks before Xmas.

I assume the flash players just use a CF card that you update with whatever you want to listen to? Sounds ok, I used to have a MD player and I disliked switching MD or updating a MD constantly. I think this time I would rather have a player that can hold a fair amount of music at all times. Thx for the input people

No, the one I have is built in. NO card. You just connect it via USB and just use the software provided. You can change the firmware and make it a standard drag-n-drop type device if you want also. All of my songs are 192kb and I can get around 80 on there easily.

Thats nice that its not a card. Looks like I could fit about 8-10 CDs worth of music the way I have music stored on my computer presently. Looking at reviews of this player on epinions now. Anybody have another website they like to use for reviews etc??

Sounds like the Rio Carbon has a HDwhereas the CF models dont and thus dont skip. The CF sounds good, but for even less $$ I can pick up a player with 5 gigs of storage (Rio Carbon). Anybody have this player?

Actually, upon reading reviews for the Rio Carbon, theres no way in hell I would pick it up. So far the iRiver 1Gig CF player tops my list, but I would like to think about a HD model as well. Nobody w/ a HD mp3 player (besides the iPod) with an opinion?

What did you read in the reviews that turned you off so bad to the rio carbon? I am considering getting one, but I think I would use it a bit during excersising, so I may want to go flash based. But I haven't found too many reviews that really knock the carbon, so please let me know.
