MP3 losing steam

I read this and I just think of it as another way of the music industry trying to downplay mp3 to the newer generation of music listeners. While other formats exist, I think mp3 will still be around for awhile. Now the article would have been more pointed, had they looked at how broadband connections have decreased the need for small mp3 file size in favor of images and wav rips of cds. Fun to read.

Researchers say the data does not show that MP3 is losing much of its popularity--files encoded in the format are just more disposable than rivals. People are still downloading boatloads of MP3 files--but they are discarding them at an even faster rate, the researchers said.

NPD researchers estimate that there was a net loss of about 742 million MP3 files from U.S. hard drives between August 2003 and July 2004, despite people acquiring billions of songs from file-trading networks and their own CDs. By contrast, Windows Media files showed a net gain of 537 million files on U.S. hard drives, Josephson said.
And they know this how?

Oh, that's right. MS operating systems call home and blab about what's on the hard drive.
😉

haha you should add "MS propaganda, more crap than PN" to your title 😉 I love the "Mp3's are going out the door but uhh.. *cough*.. in uhh contrast, wma has a net gain of 537 million files...
