Anyone have a suggestion for an MP3 head unit under $400? My main criteria are reliability/quality and sound quality. I don't care about blinky lights or bling bling.

I like my Blaupunkt MP3000. I got it for under $200. The Blaupunkt San Jose is slightly nicer. Get that if you want more pre-outs.

If you're going MP3, get a kenwood. I have the KDC-MP919, but it's slightly out of your price range ($479 @ crutchfield). I's suggest getting the KDC-MP819, just a step down from the 919, and it's $379.

Yup. I have that one and it is one of the best.

If you search this forums for other topics of almost the exact same title as yours you will see that many people in here reccomend the JVC line of players.

They have a newer model then the sh-99 but its pretty much the exact same thing.

I say go JVC because many of us in here have it and we all love it.

I don't remember what one mine is, but it's a JVC mp3 player... it was like $220 or so at best buy...

Displays the name of the song, comes with a remote, it's perfect :)

My Rockford Fosgate RFX-9400 should be coming in the mail from Marlin today, so I'll hopefully get it installed this weekend. I'll let you know what I think.

I have the MP919--it is one of the best out there. One problem with many of the other ones out there is that they take a few seconds to skip to the next song when playing mp3s. The Kenwood is super-fast at doing that... not instantaneous but split-second fast. It also reads ID3 tags, which not all of them do (that may or may not be important to you). I wish it read ID3 v2.3 tags as well as v1, but it's not that big of a deal.

Oh, and you can easily get this HU for under $350. Don't ever pay Crutchfield prices unless you really need the harness and instruction booklet they give you. They really are a rip-off. Here is the place I ordered it from three months ago. It was $370 then, now it's only $329!!! I had absolutely no problems ordering from them and neither has anyone else I've talked to. It all carries US Warranties, no grey market stuff. All this goes to show is how much profit Crutchfield makes from people who don't know they can get a better price elsewhere.

Check out the features of this puppy at Crutchfield (
Link). I always do research there... just never buy there!
