Can someone recommend a good quality encoder, preferably Fraunhofer? I'm also looking for a player with a good playlist.

I don't think Fraunhofer gets good reviews, Lame seems to be the one to get. I belive WinLama does Fraunhofer though...
 
Get LAME. It's way better than Fraunhofer, and it's free. Do a search on the forums, this has been covered at least several hundred times.
