The Story: license of mp3 has changed. New license says that not only mp3-encoders need a license (that cost money) but decoders as well (.75 cents per encoder). How long will we be having free Winamps and the like? Would you be willing to pay for a mp3 playback-software?

I guess it's really time to move to Ogg Vorbis....

Yikes, still a royality if you develop your very own mp3 decoder. What a load , so much for hard work.

I'm not sure that LAME is 100% legal... At least there used to be problems regarding it's legality.

I'd assume (but I really don't know) that this is only if you use their algorithms in the docoders/encoders. There are number of alternative programs that can encode/decode MP3 w/o having to use their code. They could be claiming that anything that is MPEG3 compressed or decompressed regardless of the code is part of their patent [edit] checked the Q@A and indeed that is what it appears they are claiming [/edit], but, they'd have to start suing to change things... and so much is out in the public domain now and for so long that I'd think they have basically forgone their ability to go back and claim ownership of the technology in that capacity.

IIRC if you do not make a reasonable effort to enforce your patent, at some point, you lose it.

But, IANALawyer.

yeah, i'm sure people are going to worry about paying for software that lets you listen to illegally downloaded music.

wouldn't want to break the law or anything...

I'll believe it when it actually happens.

I said the same thing when they said they were going to shut down napster.

That's a bit different. That was a union against a single company. This is a single company against the world, fighting over a world-wide supported used-to-be-free compression format. Didn't someone just recently come out and say something similar to this about jpeg?

How are they going to stop our current MP3s and players from working?

Yeah, that's what I thought! ;)

I see this as about as successful as trying to copywrite URL's and Jpg's.

This reminds me of the story I heard awhile back about those fools who wanted royalties for every hyperlink on the web, claiming that it was their patent.

This is just some bastards trying to make a few cent's on their missed opportunity to become filthy rich. Trying to capitalize on something that has been free for so long is just lame, and if anything were to come of this, I'm sure there are other formats waiting to be used/discovered that will no doubt be free.

They couldn't, but, if they had a legal leg to stand on they'd go after the manuf of the I/C or the device for illegally selling it and sue them for damages. They might collect some from companies who'd rather settle than to fight it out, but eventually they'll lose.

Ugh!

You need to pay them for their mp3PRO stuff, not other people's MP3 stuff.

This thread is one example of how bad rumors get started.

I forgot about all those portable MP3 palyers!

What I was getting at is MP3 wouldn't be dead at least for me. I make my own MP3s and since current encoders and players would still work in the future, they really can't do anything about it. The only way to lure me away would be by coming up with a format that was VASTLY superior to MP3 in both filesize and sound quality. ;)

As soon as I see a portable MP3 player supporting Egg Scorbis or whatever I'll take a look. Until then MP3 forever!

Please. They're not going to stop mp3, as hard as they might try.

The RIAA is trying to stop file sharing, and look at how much progress they've made.
