MP3 CD-Player, worth a purchase???

My current CD player is showing signs of near future death, so it's time to get a replacement. I have so many CD's that keeping them stored in the small room I have is no longer a practical option, there are cd's EVERYWHERE. So to get away from this mess I was thinking of just getting an MP3 CD-Player.

I'm big on good sound, and the current cd-player I have sounds awesome. My biggest fear is getting an MP3-CD player and having it sound like crap (distortion at semi-high volume, lack of power for decent volume levels). Dose anyone have any experience with MP3players/MP3 cd players?

I have no clue what to get 😕.

I bought a RCA at bestbuy recently for $69. It sounds great at all volumes but I am no audio expert. Unfortunatly after I bought it and 30 days had passed I realized that I don't listen to enough music for me to keep it and now it is up for sale.

I got a Riovolt sp250 and I love it. I'll never go back to a regular cd again. Best part is that it's $100 at amazon.com

Hmmm, some good stuff here. I hear some companys cut corners and use non-standard 16 Ohm ear-buds to boost signal, so when you use 32ohm and up standard headphones the player dose not get very loud at all. Anyone use a nice set of headphones with these players?

How dose it sound?

It sounds as good as any of them.
The encoding process depends upon the quality of the encoder, but decoding is always done then same whether done by winamp or hardware.

Slim-X looks good, but they don't use normal AA batteries, battery packs are evil 😱.

it uses 2 slim rechargable NiMH batteries. the same minidiscs use IIRC.

I have the slimX and I recommend you get it. There is no better CD-MP3 player out there and its not too expensive.

I brough a cheapo one and it broke after 3 months. The slimX has been runnign without a hitch since early december.

I've looked at that, dosen't really float my boat though. I like the idea of using cds as media, dont have to worry about running out of space.

If you're looking for a really portable sollution, Minidisc recorders are pretty good. The discs are small and SP dubs (Acording to some sony research) using relativley high end audio equipment are indistinguishable from CD's. But they're expensive and they can dub pretty slow (A stereo system will dub at 4X though).

As for the SlimX it matters what kind of sound you want. The SlimX don't give as bright sound as the Sony's but acording to some stuff I heard give a more acurate representation for stuff like classical and stuff. I would highly reccomend an Amp with your purchase too, as an Amp can do wonders to opening up sound.

Pansonic also has a nice unit (CT-800 I believe) but the SlimX is more flexible. It even has games, heh. But no really, the equalizer and all of that good stuff on the SlimX is useful. What I would do is audition units at their stores.

By the way, you will have NO volume problems with the SlimX. I heard someone comment that 2/3 the way up the volume bar was the max he would go with his Grados for comfortable extended listening. It seems the SlimX's have a decent powered amp.

Good to know FishTank, sound and battery life is really all that matters to me, Slim-X "seems" like the best choice. We'll see 🙂.

My Sony rocks! The sound quality with my Grado SR-60 headphones is awesome! The Slim-X looks mighty fine, too.

What modle do you have?
Sony D-CJ01. It's $129.99 at the Sony Style site. I paid $149.00 when I purchased it 15 months ago. It has held up well and the battery life has been good. I get 10+ hours of listening while using my NiMH rechargable batteries.
