Ok this may sound a bit dumb (and i did try to find some info on AMD's page and others but with no luck) but it just bugs the hell out of me.

What's the diff in price, spec and performance wise between the 2 - the AMD Athlon XP & MP? What does the MP stand for? I thought that they stand for "Mobile Performance" and are used in notebooks. Are they faster (same core speed say 1.4Gig?) then their older cousins the T-birds?

Thx.

They r the same. The MP is guaranteed to run in SMP config by AMD while the XP is not. Having said that, most ppl had been able to run XP is SMP config w/ no prob.

SMP=Dual Processors

The MP has had its SMP circuitry tested and is warrantied to work in an SMP system.
The XP has not had its SMP circuitry tested. While it works for most if not all people in an SMP system, AMD will show you the door if you try to make a warranty claim based in SMP problems.
The XP is multiplier locked whereas the MP is multiplier unlocked.

Both do SMP jsut fine and it says so on AMD's website. The MP is the only cpu warrentied for smp though. It also has a smp instruction set which is supposed to enhance smp applications. As far as I know no applications yet use this instruction set so its useless.

Dont forget that:

MP: No laser cut trenches in L1 bridges (easy to unlock and overclock)

XP: Laser cut trenches in L1 bridges (have to fill with epoxy or superglue before you can draw a trace line to overclock):cool:
